Heavy and technical use

When is the API worth considering instead of a subscription?

It depends on whether you create in an interface, or generate in bulk inside your own workflow.

Start with how you work

If you need a web editor, templates and a modest amount of hands-on work, look at consumer subscriptions first. If you need programmatic calls, batch processing, or generation embedded in your own product, compare API plans. A subscription does not automatically include API credits.

Costs compare only when the capability matches

Model version, output specification, audio, clip length, queue mode and commercial-use rules all have to match. When this site's calculator puts subscriptions and APIs side by side, it compares the same model at the same resolution and audio setting and labels which is which; the editor, templates and other extras a subscription includes are not priced in.

Count minimum charges and retries

The estimate is unit price × billed quantity × attempts, plus any minimum spend, minimum billed duration, idle fee or add-on service charge. The number of attempts should come from your own assumption or trial record, not from an unverified success rate.

Each provider's API prices are on API prices, recorded from the official pages and dated; the cost calculator puts subscriptions and APIs side by side for your monthly usage.
